Not getting enough sunshine in your day means low levels of Vitamin D!
As Autumn starts and the days are getting shorter, people at risk are those with little or no sun exposure(1), people like office workers, taxi drivers, factory workers or night-shift workers…..
In these lower light months to increase your vitamin D intake reducing wearing long sleeve clothes and sunscreen is one way to absorb more vitamin D!
Vitamin D is a really important hormone that regulates calcium levels in the blood. It is crucial for bone and muscle development, and for preventing osteoporosis. Vitamin D deficiency may not result in any obvious symptoms, but without treatment it can have significant health effects and increase a person’s risk of musculoskeletal conditions, such as:
- Bone and muscle pain
- Rickets in children(soft bones)
- Osteopenia in older adults(weak bones, early stage osteoporosis
It is important to maintain your vitamin D levels by getting enough sunshine, but also make sur eyou have enough calcium rich foods in your diet such as: Dairy foods such as milk, cheese, yoghurt, Leafy greens such as broccoli, cabbage, salmon, nuts and beans.
Low vitamin D has also been linked to an increased risk of:
- Multiple sclerosis
- Diabetes (type1 and type 2)
- Various types of cancers (particularly colon cancer)
- Heart disease
- Mental health conditions (including schizophrenia)
- Worse outcomes in stroke
- Altered immunity and other autoimmune diseases.
More research is needed to see whether increasing vitamin D levels could help prevent any of these conditions.
So get outside now and have a break! And think about what could help you to Move, Feel and Perform Better?
